The purpose of this video is to offer insight into one Open Write poem-writing process: http://www.ethicalela.com/kitchen-gho...
This video is shared with educators to encourage their own writing but also to inspire educators to share their writing process with students. I begin with noticing the moves of the mentor poem and then commenting on aspects of the craft I'd like to try in my own poem. Then, I begin to draft from the mentor poem, commenting on several of my decisions and surprises along the way. My timer goes off while I am mid-phrase, so I try to honor the time I set for my writing and wrap it up. This may be the most difficult part: leaving a poem as is, saying "Okay, enough for today." However, the Open Write spaces is about drafting. We know the poems are crafted in short bursts.
I begin with sharing a little bit about the prompted offered by Glenda Funk and inspired by Crystal Wilkinson's "Kitchen Ghosts."
I set my timer for 15 minutes to minimize perfection and to write within a short-ish burst of time. This is about practice and volume -- daily writing. I may or may not come back to the draft to revise. The poem may just live at it was first composed.
