Gallery Sanskriti opened twenty five years ago in the year 1990. At the time the idea of having an artist residency had not yet been conceived. It was a natural progression in the scheme of things that Art Ichol was born.

Bikash Bhattacharjee was the first artist who stayed, not at Ichol, but Maihar, the family home. The original attraction was the Classical Indian Music Gharana of Maihar. Upon his return to Calcutta, he mysteriously found that he was inspired. He wanted to paint Maihar, the bungalow and the various subjects he had found in the surrounding villages. This was the beginning of a series of workshops, where not only painters, but writers, journalists and sculptors would spend a few weeks in Maihar. In these few weeks many ideas were exchanged and many brilliant works produced in an eclectic atmosphere. Perhaps the prolific output that came during or soon after these workshops could be attributed to the vast open greens, or the distance from the cities, perhaps it could be attributed to the proximity of the Music Gharana or the Khajuraho Temples, but there was an undoubted feeling of mental space.

When the ceramics centre was opened in 2009, and visiting painters began to dabble in sculpture, the idea that is now Art Ichol came about, where artists could create, and in various disciplines under one roof. Thus was born Art Ichol, the Creative Escape and Amaria, the Writer's retreat.

Art Ichol is located in rural Madhya Pradesh, between Khajuraho and Bandhavgarh. It is a residency created for Artists and art appreciators where artists can reside away from the city and create in the discipline of their choice. Built of local Khaparel tiles, and using brick powder and lime instead of cement, it draws from its surroundings, creating a unique space in the midst of lush green fields dotted by yellow mustard. Here residents can experiment with media such as stone, bronze, clay and fibreglass, where they may be assisted by on site-aides to work outside their usual medium of choice. Art Ichol is a liberating space where new creative avenues may be explored, and lasting friendships built between residing artists.
