In this episode of Garage Time, I show how I calibrated my classic VDO oil pressure and temperature gauges using the ECU’s PWM output on my EFI Porsche 911 hot rod.
Since switching to a modern standalone ECU and a Siltec combo oil pressure/temperature sensor, I deleted the original resistance-based sending unit. Instead of installing new aftermarket gauges, I’m using the ECU to drive the factory VDO gauges using pulse width modulation (PWM).
In this video we cover:
• How PWM controls a resistance-style VDO gauge
• Why 100 Hz works better than 20–30 Hz
• How duty cycle affects gauge sweep
• Filtering the signal so the needle doesn’t bounce
• Programming the factory “idiot light” as a multi-function warning light
This setup blends classic Porsche looks with modern EFI functionality — and adds engine protection strategies like oil pressure shutdown or limp mode.
Modern control. Vintage feel.
