In this video you will see how hourglasses were made in medieval and renaissance times.
To do this I have been inspired by the few remains of clocks that are preserved (wreck of the Mary Rose) and the first image of an hourglass that appeared in Lorenzetti's Allegory of Good Government, painted in 1338. In order for it to work, the sand grains must be uniform, in my case, I used flint sand for pool purifiers, and the ratio between the thickness of the sand grain and the hole between bottles should be 1/12 and never higher than 1/2 i,f we don't want the sand to get stuck and plug the hole.
These clocks, were widely used in navigation. We know that Magallanes carried 18 hourglasses made in Barcelona on his trip around the world. Barcelona was, along with Venice, one of the main glass producing centers at that time.
I hope you like this medieval craft.
