The Sutton Hoo helmet is an Anglo-Saxon masterpiece of gold, silver and garnet. It probably belonged to King Raedwald, leader of the East Angles, in the late 500s and early 600s AD. Historical records suggest he converted to Christianity, and had a temple in Suffolk dedicated to both Chirst and the traditional pagan Gods. Scribes also report that it was his wife who advised him on thorny matters of leadership. Her name has been lost to history, but she was clearly an awesome woman. On the eve of great change, this is her tale, inspired in part by the epic Beowulf, in part by the archaeology, and in part by a good dose of imagination....
