The second episode of “Between the Lines” podcast is filled with a lively and enlightening discussion about Atomic Habits by James Clear, a book that investigates the science behind how people build habits and further their personal development. The discussion panel consisted of three UM6P students who share their personal experiences in adopting and sustaining habits and how small, consistent changes could lead to transformational results. It opens on discussing why habits define the course that one’s life takes. It pinpoints the core message of the book—that success is not about setting really ambitious goals; it is about creating systems that can perpetuate progress in a given direction. Participants comment that habits work like an internal algorithm, shaping behaviours that in turn translate into what a person accomplishes over time.
One of the most tentative insights gained is identity-based habit formation. Instead of setting a goal to achieve an outcome, people should focus on the kind of person they want to become. They frame “I want to run faster” as “I am an athlete,” and “I want to read more” as “I am a reader.” In so doing, they make possible the consistent creation of sustainable habits. It is such a perspective that really seems to strike a chord in the participants, especially the athlete when he discusses rebuilding his performance after a six-year hiatus. They also discuss how the habit loop—cue, routine, and reward—play an important role in shaping behaviour and reflect on personal triggers for both positive and negative habits.
The discussion also focuses on the principle of marginal gains—a kind of concept whereby small incremental improvements lead to exponential progress over time. The students refer to the famous case study from Atomic Habits: how even the British cycling team reached world-class success by making small 1% improvements in even seemingly minor areas, such as sleep quality, bike aerodynamics, and even hand hygiene. They insist that this notion applies to daily life—be it academics, fitness, or personal growth. It is often the little efforts that pay off more than drastic changes. Another powerful strategy, called the two-minute rule, suggests starting new habits in such a way that the least effort is required, such as reading only one page or doing just one push-up. This is very practical in overcoming procrastination and developing long-term consistency.
A large part of the discussion focuses on how environment influences habit building. They share how one could design one’s environment to make certain habits easy and painless, such as putting bottles of water around the house to encourage hydration or set up a study space. They speak to the social environment being one that shapes behaviour, too—how being among like-minded people can almost be infectious in setting desired behaviours into motion. They further acknowledge that at times, one does not create habits in uncontrollable environments: for example, one may live in a noisy house or be managing multiple identities of student, athlete, friend, and professional. This takes a deeper look at the complications in keeping discipline when external factors make consistency hard.
The discussion wraps up by bringing in delayed gratification: sticking to a process in the absence of immediate rewards. The students believe that this is usually where most resolutions stop working, since most people give up when the progress is slow, and the results do not appear abruptly. They emphasize changing one’s focus from short-term wins to long-term systems, making sure that the process itself is rewarding, not just the outcome. They leave with a fresh outlook on building habits and one key takeaway in mind: Atomic Habits is not a book about productivity but a roadmap to lifelong improvement. They reflect on how such strategies put into their own lives had already returned considerable dividends and pledge to continue honing their habits in pursuit of greater personal and professional success.
