Which of the two faces of evil that Michael Rooker displays in Mississippi Burning represents the real Frank? Which one keeps him from being a one-dimensional villain, and instead makes him a complex human being, whose character is genuinely interesting, and not boring to audiences?
Having recently re-watched this film after hearing of Gene Hackman's passing, I couldn't help but think about this, as I noticed one very small and subtle moment which provides a great illustration of how writers can write more complex characters, as opposed to the boring, one-dimensional, "evil for evil's sake" villains seen in some of the bad writing examples I analyzed in two previous videos. An analysis of how a subtle edit to a reaction shot of one of the most despicable characters you'll ever see in film manages to humanize him despite all of that, and serves as a valuable writing tip for my fellow playwrights....
