🔗🧼 Step by Step Guide – Cleaning a Motorcycle Chain

Step 0: Before starting, gather all the required parts and tools:

• Cold degreaser or Chain cleaner (O-ring chains are more sensitive than unsealed chains, so use a dedicated cleaner)
• Brush
• Rag
• Water or brake cleaner
• Chain lubricant
• Tray (to catch drips)

Step 1: Lift the rear wheel off the ground, ideally with a paddock stand. It’s not essential, but it makes rotating the wheel much easier than pushing the bike back and forth.

Step 2: Remove the shift rod by loosening the arm shift pinch bolt (the one on top of the shift arm connecting the shift rod to the output shaft). Use a 5 mm Allen bit. Set the shift rod aside.

Step 3: Remove the three front sprocket cover screws (also called engine sprocket cover screws) with a 5 mm Allen. Take off the sprocket cover. Scrape away most of the built-up dirt around the front sprocket and inside the cover using a thin tool, like a flathead screwdriver (or even a sturdy tree stick if that’s what you’ve got).

Step 4: If you have a box cutter or similar tool, carefully scrape excess dirt from the rear sprocket.

Step 5: Spray chain cleaner on the front sprocket, chain, rear sprocket and inside the chain cover. Use the brush to scrub thoroughly, paying special attention to the gaps between the sprocket teeth. Don’t let the cleaner sit for too long.

Step 6: Rinse everything with water or brake cleaner. Be cautious if using a pressure washer, as O-ring chains are sensitive to high pressure.

Step 7: Dry the chain and sprockets using compressed air or a clean rag.

Step 8: Apply chain lubricant evenly along the chain. Make sure you get the chain rollers soaked.

Step 9: Refit the front sprocket cover with its three bolts. Torque to 12 Nm / 8.7 lbf ft.

Step 10: Reattach the shift rod, ensuring the angle is correct. Torque the arm shift pinch bolt to 14 Nm / 10 lbf ft.

Step 11: Double-check everything looks and feels right.

Step 12: Congratulations, you did it, now go ride! 👏🏍️💨
