A lonely summer dog that lived on a beach

Those lonely summer dogs like Lou represent everything I love and everything I hate about Greece. The endless summer, the hot sun, the beaches, the resorts and the small, picturesque fishing villages, are some of the best things Greece has to offer.
And while you are on your 15 day vacation, there they are. Those lonely, abandoned summer dogs, that come from all walks of life, and end up there, because that’s where people are in the summer.
It’s easy to allow yourself to believe, that nothing will change after you are gone. That the summer will be endless, that the place will not be emptied, that everything will remain as you remember. People always try to make it easy on themselves, especially on vacation. They just can’t let themselves be bothered with anything that will spoil that well deserved two week break from reality.
This could not be farther from the truth, and every rescuer knows that. Once the summer ends, and yes it does end, those dogs that were used to be petted and fed by tourists who do their random acts of kindness, are left surrounded by empty restaurants, closed beach bars, and the few locals. And the locals here do not waste time or money on stray dogs.
By the end of the summer, those dogs starve. They start looking desperately for food, they become annoying, a burden. They are usually poisoned per dozens, until the next season, when new strays appear, to live for one and only summer, like the cicadas, who emerge from the ground, only to sing for a few weeks before they die.
For all the above reasons, Lou was very important to me. He represented a lot more than I can express, and his adoption filled me with hope. There couldn’t be a better time to tell his story. It’s summer again, the beaches are full, and nothing has changed. One long weekend in a small fishing village an hour away from Athens, had me come back crying, feeling hopeless. Most dogs in the end of the video come from that village. They live by the sea, they a re social and cute and happy. For now. Next year they won’t be there, and that is a fact.
A huge thans to SCARS for taking Lou under it’s care, and Frieden für Pfoten for making his journey to his forever home possible.
