First things first, we will need to download and install the Fabric mod loader. This is the mod loader that allows you to add the controller mod to Minecraft 1.21.5. There is a link to get Fabric in the description above. That will take you to our complete guide on getting Fabric 1.21.5. That goes over everything including download and install Fabric 1.21.5 in order to run the Controller mod in 1.21.5.

Next, we need to download MidnightControls 1.21.5. This is the Minecraft controller mod that actually allows us to use a controller with Java Edition. There is a link to MidnightControls in the description above. This will take you to MidnightControls on Modrinth. On that page, click on “Versions”, and then find the 1.21.5 Fabric version of MidnightControls. Click the download button that appears when you hover over it, and MidnightControls will begin downloading!

You will also need to download the Fabric API. This is a dependency mod that MidnightControls requires in order to work with Minecraft 1.21.5. There is a link to our guide on getting the Fabric API in the description above. That links to the download page where you can download the 1.21.5 version.

Now, we move on to how to install the the Minecraft Java controller mod for 1.21.5. To do this, open up the Minecraft launcher, click on “Installations” at the top, and make sure the “modded” tick box is checked in the top right.

Hover over the Fabric 1.21.5 installation on this page, and click on the folder icon that appears. This will open the .minecraft folder. In this folder, you should have a “mods” folder. If you don’t have a mods folder, just create one!

Drag-and-drop the Fabric API and MidnightControls into the mods folder. It’s that easy to add the controller mod to Minecraft PC 1.21.5.

You can now plug the controller you want to use into your PC and in the Minecraft Launcher play Minecraft using your Fabric installation. You must play Minecraft 1.21.5 with Fabric in order to use controller with Minecraft Java Edition.

Once you are in-game, Minecraft should recognize your controller right away. If it doesn’t, unplug and plug the controller back in and you should then be able to use it in game. You can go to options, controls, and select the controller icon in the top right to change a ton of different settings in regards to your controller. By default though, the controls are very similar to Minecraft Bedrock.
