Floris Special No. 127 Fragrance Review: A Multifaceted Cologne From Historical London

[01:05] Part 1: Composition

This is a citrus aromatic scent, which means that the citrus is complemented by herbaceous notes.

Compared to Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet, which is absolutely dominated by lemon and lime, Floris Special No. 127 is subtler.

In the head, bergamot brings citrus, lavender and petitgrain, so you get citrus, floral, and herbaceous qualities, respectively.

Petitgrain is a scent created from citrus tree twigs, a citrus note with a green and herbaceous component.

The heart is extraordinarily floral, due to a combination of geranium, rose, ylang-ylang, and jasmine.

During No. 127's floral heart, it almost gives the impression of a women's fragrance.

However, taking its top, middle, and base together, we consider this to be a mildly masculine fragrance.

Following the heart, the base notes of patchouli and labdanum are earthy, musky and animal-like.

[03:00] Part 2: Seasonality

This is an absolute spring and summer fragrance, because of the green and herbaceous notes.

[03:17] Part 3: Wake & Strength

Sillage and projection are tight on this fragrance, while its longevity is on the short side.

Floris Special No. 127's longevity of half a day is better than Blenheim Bouquet, but shorter than other historical fragrances.

[03:50] Part 4: Impressions

This is a daytime fragrance fit for the office or casual functions.

If used before going to the office, it will last from morning until about lunchtime.

For the second half of the day, you'd need a bottle at the office, so it's not ideal.

Due to of its short duration, it's better for a something like summertime barbecue on the weekend. Overall, it's a bit complex for most casual occasions.

Floris Special No. 127 is a mature fragrance and, therefore, suited to guys in their 30's and 40's.

This is because it is mildly masculine, but with subtle and varied notes that give it deeper character.

Feedback for this fragrance has been all over the place, due to its complex drydown.

Paul found that its floral side struck some people as feminine, yet others picked up the masculine musky base.

Therefore, its character changes considerably throughout its stages.

While there are better spring and summer options, like Creed Aventus, it has a great story behind it.

For 100ml, Floris Special No. 127 is about $135 USD, about £95 GBP, hence, it's on the expensive side.

Although this scent is firmly retro and perhaps even dated, if you appreciate historical fragrances, this is worth picking up.

It has a place alongside other historial fragrances of returning popularity, for instance, Estée Lauder's Aramis and Paco Rabanne's Pour Homme.

Overall, it's a good alternative summer fragrance, even if it may not be your main go-to scent.

If you appreciate the Winston Churchill connection or the association with London, this may be a good choice.

Also, if Floris Special No. 127's particular composition speaks to you, it is also worth getting.

However, if you're unsure, haven't smelled it or have a small fragrance collection, we wouldn't recommend it.
