Feds detail “follow-the-money” plan to combat fraud, extortion in Canada

Описание: Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced a series of consultations over the federal government's ‘National Anti-Fraud Strategy’ Monday in Montreal – a plan first revealed in last fall's federal budget.

Speaking mostly in French, Champagne told reporters the consultations will seek feedback on three initial measures as part of the first-of-its-kind, “follow-the-money” strategy.

These measures include supporting law enforcement's ability to detect, disrupt, and prevent extortion across Canada, while strengthening public awareness of the rapidly-growing issue.

Simultaneously, the government aims to establish a multi-sector anti-fraud network that would introduce new obligations for federally regulated financial institutions, telecommunication providers and digital platforms – to help provide warnings of potential fraud and introduce screening for fraudulent profiles.
