Acquiring high-quality 3D seismic data on land is traditionally much more expensive than it is at sea because of the infrastructure, time and manpower required.
In a conventional land seismic survey a line of trucks with vibrating plates stop at regular intervals to send sound waves into the ground one at a time, so there is no interference between their signals when the sound waves are reflected off the rocks below, and picked up by grids of receivers, called geophones. These reflected sound waves are then analyzed to give a 2D picture of where the gas resources are.
But natural gas is increasingly found in complex geological structures, where the rock is less permeable. And identifying the sweet spots in such 'tight gas' formations is much harder with conventional 2D land seismic. This has led to drilling hundreds of wells over vast areas, often proving uneconomic.
BP's decades of technical expertise in developing gas fields has led to major breakthroughs in the productivity and quality of the seismic data we can now acquire on land.
Through our advanced seismic imaging technologies, BP is transforming the industry in both speed and quality of land seismic acquisition.
