From the Poet - Swaggie Campbell Irving
In Solidarity with the First Nation people, the spirit of the rock was written through the eyes of a Native Maori from Aotearoa in 1989 when visiting this place after the National Folk Festival in Alice Spring. I was based in Kapunda, South Australia. I regard the ‘Rock’ as the heart of our (the people of this land) Spiritual Earth Mother telling her story in the Minsulu Country.
A tribute to the ANZACS is a tribute to the heroic deeds of our men and women. I wrote this at an ANZAC Day Service in Shepparton, Victoria, Also in 1989 to honour the men of the sheds who dropped the blades to fight for Oz and the “Mateship”
The Kosciusko Bogong Moth is a Ngarigo Dreamtime creation story of how the Spring and Summer Wildflowers got their beautiful colours and also tells of the delicious Walnut flavour of the Moth during the feasting time. It was also a privilege to perform this story on stage with Nicky Bomba and his band Bustamento and the Melbourne Ska Orchestra at various places around the country.
Heroes of Eureka was written in 1989. The 145th Anniversary of Stockade Uprising in Ballarat - where I was invited to join “The Children of Eureka Organisation”- descendants of the diggers led by Paul Murphy as a Eureka Bard performing with the Howard Family, Shane and Marcia - to honour the people who made the first attempt to have a Multicultural society.
Outback - Henry Lawson is one of his many verses dedicated to this beautiful land and is also a favorite place of The Swaggie - A tribute to Winton, Central Western Queensland’s Waltzing Matilda.
Our Spiritual Earth Mother this Ancient Land is another of my original verses penned on my first trip to Cape York Far North Queensland for the Laura Quinkan Dance Festival in 1989 as a tribute to the Quinkan Spirit and Country of the Ang-Gnarra people - It has since become a signature Verse.
