Drawing from cattle drive payroll logs, trail rosters, autobiographies, court records, and film archives, the video explores the documented lives of Nat Love, Bill Pickett, Bose Ikard, and Bass Reeves — real Black cowboys, ranch hands, rodeo innovators, and lawmen who helped build the American frontier.

The documentary then examines how the closing of the frontier in 1890 coincided with the rise of early Western films. As Hollywood began shaping the myth of the West, casting decisions, studio marketing, and television Westerns systematically centered white actors while minimizing or removing Black riders from the screen.

Rather than focusing on accusation, this Black history and film history documentary analyzes how narrative control reshaped public memory. It explores how cinema transformed a diverse, multiethnic frontier into a one-dimensional myth — and how visual storytelling replaced historical record in the American imagination.

The West did not change.
The camera did.
