Today I'm going to address 3 tests that are essentially meaningless in mild cases of TBI. Mild TBI is a silent epidemic and affects as many as 10 million Americans each year.
First responders and other medical personnel in emergency rooms are not well equipped to properly screen these cases. In fact, the tests that have been traditionally run to determine whether a person has a mild traumatic brain injury or not are pretty useless.
Here is how you can protect your loved one if they have been in a traumatic accident and need your help.
1) Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
It's based on a 15-point scale and does NOT properly screen for a brain injury. Instead, ask for the GOAT (Galveston Orientation and Amnesia Test). It tests more appropriately whether there is an alteration in consciousness.
2) CT Scan
A cat scan has no value in establishing whether a person has suffered a mild or even serious brain injury. It is useless in mild TBI cases.
In addition to the CT Scan, they also often perform a "normal" MRI. Unfortunately, this is also not powerful enough to determine a mild TBI. It doesn't go into enough minute details that are needed for proper diagnosis.
3) EEG
The third test that is not useful is an EEG. There's no concrete evidence that an EEG can help spot a mild traumatic brain injury.
Instead, ask for the following tests:
1) Ask for a GOAT Test
2) Ask for a diffusion tensor imaging exam or a Diffusion MRI.
This is an MRI on steroids. It measures the water flow in the brain.
The problem is that the medical emergency room personnel are looking for complete non-responsiveness or that the person cannot even say their name. But that's not always or even usually the case in a mild TBI.
You have a chance to help your loved one get the proper tests to help diagnose their mild TBI so that they can get proper treatment.
