Italy’s territory has changed significantly over the past two centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century, Italy did not exist as a single country and was instead divided into several states, including the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Papal States, Lombardy–Venetia under Austrian control, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. During the Risorgimento, the Kingdom of Sardinia led a series of wars and political efforts that gradually united most of the peninsula, culminating in the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 and the capture of Rome in 1870.
Following unification, Italy sought to expand its influence and acquired several colonies in Africa. During World War I, Italy joined the Entente in exchange for territorial promises and, after the war, gained South Tyrol, Trieste, and Istria. However, the failure to obtain most of Dalmatia led to widespread dissatisfaction and the idea of a “mutilated victory.”
This resentment played a role in the rise of Mussolini and Italy’s expansionist policies during World War II. Although Italy temporarily expanded its territory, defeat in the war resulted in the loss of its colonies and eastern territories. After the war, Trieste became a disputed region and was briefly part of a separate international arrangement before being divided during the Cold War, establishing Italy’s modern borders.
