Serious concerns have emerged over illegal poaching activities in Naxalbari, located near the India–Nepal border. Reports suggest that poachers are hunting birds across multiple wetlands, riverbeds, and sandbars, particularly along the Mechi River. Traps have been laid out in river char areas to capture migratory and local bird species.

Environmental activists claim that nets used for bird trapping have been recovered from several water bodies, raising alarms about the growing threat to biodiversity in the sensitive border region. There are also allegations that poachers from Nepal and Bihar may be involved in these cross-border wildlife crimes.
