Kingston, Jamaica. March 14th, 1966. 3:45 p.m.
Bob Marley was walking down King Street when the police car pulled up. Two officers stepped out, looked at Bob and Bunny Wailer, and stopped on their hair.
"What's this?"
"It's our hair, sir."
"This is against public decency. You're under arrest."
Bob's dreadlocks had been growing for two years. In 1966 Jamaica, dreadlocks were illegal. Seen as dangerous. Criminal. A sign of rebellion.
Bob was handcuffed and thrown in the back of the police car. People on the street watched. Nobody intervened.
At the station, Bob was put in a cell. Six feet by eight feet. A metal bench. A toilet with no seat. The door clanged shut.
He was in jail. For his hair.
Hours passed. Bob sat. Stood. Paced. There was nothing to do. No window. No way to know if it was day or night.
Then Bob found a stone on the floor. He picked it up and walked to the wall.
He started scratching words into the concrete.
What he wrote in that cell became one of the most powerful protest songs in history. A song that's still sung at rallies, protests, and concerts around the world.
Twenty-four hours in jail. One stone. One wall. One song that changed everything.

⚠️ DISCLAIMER:
This story is inspired by documented accounts of police harassment against Rastafarians in 1960s Jamaica, when dreadlocks were criminalized and Rastafarians faced systematic persecution. While Bob Marley and other Rastafarian musicians were frequently arrested and harassed during this period, and "Get Up, Stand Up" was written as a protest anthem, the specific arrest details and jail cell scene have been dramatized for storytelling purposes to honor the historical reality of Rastafarian persecution in Jamaica.
