In this episode of Mani Ki Baat, Suneet Ke Sath, Mani and Suneet are joined by Syeda Hameed, a distinguished social activist, educationist, writer, and former member of the Planning Commission of India.

Titled “The Mahatma and the Maulana,” the episode revisits two towering moral figures of the freedom movement. A pious Hindu and a pious Muslim, both were caught in the violent vortex of Partition, yet stood united in their principled opposition to the Two Nation Theory, the Pakistan Movement, and the politics of religious separation associated with Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

The conversation draws on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s historic address at the Jama Masjid, in which he reproached his community for ignoring his counsel, and places it alongside Mahatma Gandhi’s unwavering insistence on compassion, restraint, and the protection of minorities as the truest expression of Hinduism. Rather than treating these figures in isolation, the discussion focuses on the shared ethical foundations of their thought and their belief in a composite India.

The episode is released to coincide with the hour of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, at around 5 p.m. on 30 January, commemorating his martyrdom. Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, an act rooted in an ideology of hate that stood in direct opposition to the values he lived and died for.
