ADHD and PTSD occur frequently together, but they also share many symptoms in common, and can be confused with each other.

ADHD, through inattention, impulsivity, attraction to risky pursuits, and hyperactivity, doubles the likelihood that an individual suffers trauma. But even at equivalent rates of trauma, those with ADHD seem to develop PTSD more frequently than do those without ADHD.

PTSD, particularly from repeated trauma, early in development, can lead to a condition indistinguishable from ADHD. But all cases of ADHD are NOT attributable to PTSD. We know this because numerous studies show that genetics play a greater role than environment in who develops ADHD; careful history taking fails to reveal any notable trauma in many individuals with full symptoms of ADHD; and rates of physical and sexual abuse trauma have decreased substantially in the last thirty years, while rates of ADHD have increased.
