This fun dessert is super easy to make with simple ingredients like pretzels, chocolate and marshmallows. This is such a great treat for the kids to help out with during the holidays.
Ingredients
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter (salted or unsalted is fine)
2 packages (10 oz each) or 11 cups miniature marshmallows. reserve about 1/2 a cup for decorating & snacking
8 cups Cocoa Krispies or other similar rice cereal. Plain works well also
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Optional: a pinch of salt to enhance the cocoa flavor
1 bag Large pretzel sticks/rods
3/4 - 1 cup chocolate chips or melting wafers of your choice.
Directions
1. Gather your ingredients.
2. Melt the butter: In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
3. Add marshmallows: Add the marshmallows and stir constantly until they are almost completely melted and smooth. Remove the pan from the heat immediately. For best results, use fresh marshmallows.
4. Mix in optional flavorings: If using, stir in the salt and vanilla extract now.
5. Add cereal: Add the cereal and use a buttered spatula or oiled gloves to mix until all the cereal is well coated with the marshmallow mixture. Careful because it will be hot.
6. Allow to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Once cool, begin to form your turkey legs.
7. Oil your hands or gloves using butter or any unflavored oil.
8. Break off about two inches of a pretzel rod and form about 1 cup of the mixture around one end into the shape of a turkey leg leaving 3 inches exposed. If they are not holding their shape, reform occasionally or let the mixture cool a while longer. you just don't want it to cool all the way.
9. Once all the turkey legs are formed melt your chocolate using either a double broiler or a microwave. I did mine 20 seconds at a time mixing in between. It took 1 minute total to get the chocolate almost fully melted. don't overdo it with the heat or the chocolate will seize up. a little un-melted is better than ruining it completely.
10. Dip or paint the exposed pretzel with chocolate.
11. Dip two marshmallows partially in chocolate and attach to the end of the pretzel. if using white chocolate you can attach the marshmallows prior to dipping/painting the pretzel then dip/paint them along with the pretzel.
12. Store in a sealed container or wrap in a cookie gift bag for up to four days.
13. Use any leftover chocolate to paint/dip some of the leftover pretzel rods.
