Workbikes Movie

Most of the footage is from Pedal Express in Berkeley, though a couple of the shots are from the original Pedalers Express in Eugene, Oregon. Some footage is from TV clips and VHS recordings, others were shot on standard video that has deteriorated from many digital transfers- I'll try and find a cleaner copy sometime. The opening picture is of Jan VanderTuin, who designed and built almost all the cargo bikes that are in this video, on one of his first Long Haul cargo bikes. He redesigned the Dutch "Long John" cargo bike and built the first ones on the east coast before he moved to Eugene to start Human Powered Machines and to found the Center for Appropriate Transport, where the original Pedal Express was started in 1992.
Note the 20" wheels front and rear, which eventually went to 26" in the rear as the standard design, though now many Longtail and some Bakfiets/Long John bikes are using 20" front and rear again.

When this video was filmed there were a few cargo bike courier companies around the US with the Berkeley location having the largest fleet and the largest number of employees (most worker-owners). Workbikes was the term used for this type of cargo bikes being used for business delivery, though the name never really stuck.
