Parkour Class: Stride Variants – Don’t Let Your Body Drive on Auto-Pilot
How do you control your body during a movement? More importantly—do you feel the process? Or do you just go through the motion and hope nothing goes wrong? Today, I want to share a small idea: sometimes what you lose in motion is not strength, but awareness.
In my view, movement shouldn’t be controlled only by the nervous system in your spine—it needs to stay connected to your brain. That means you are responsible for every part of the motion—not just before it happens, but while it’s happening, and even right after. Every small activation—from a toe, to a hip, to the spine—should stay connected in your awareness. That’s how control builds, from a single point into a chain across the whole body.
If you let your body “just do what it does” without thinking, it’s not freedom—it’s laziness. And lazy movement often leads to injuries. For example, imagine you’re climbing and you follow someone else’s beta without thinking if it actually fits your body. Then the next dyno or slippery volume might become your breaking point—and that failure is not from the wall, but from your own lack of awareness.
This stride-variant class in parkour forced me to focus on moving with intention through each barrier. My coach keeps reminding me: focus on now and what’s coming next—not only “me,” but the relationship between my body and the environment. Being aware of what every muscle and every neural pathway is doing while moving—that’s not optional, it’s the foundation.
