My mother's 62nd birthday dinner was supposed to be a celebration. Mom was already seated at the head of the table, laughing about something Rachel had said. The whole family was there — aunts, cousins, Mom's two closest friends. Everyone was dressed up. Everyone looked happy. I slid into the empty chair near the end of the table, next to Kevin, and smiled. For about forty minutes, it was fine. Then Mom stood up to say something. She does this — stands up mid-meal, taps a glass, demands everyone's attention. It's her thing. She's been doing it my whole life.
