From Road to Race: The Incredible Story of RUF's CTR2 Sport

Ruf Automobile GmbH is a German manufacturer that gained worldwide recognition in 1987 for producing the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2-based CTR, an ultra-high performance limited-production car. After a few years, the company released its successor, the CTR2, based on the Porsche 993 Turbo. However, RUF didn't stop there and came up with a new version of the CTR2, called the CTR2 Sport, which quickly became the talk of the town.

The CTR2 Sport was a stripped-out version of the CTR2, with a lightweight body made almost entirely from composite materials. Its 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine was related to the one that powered the Porsche 962, and it gained titanium connecting rods and a lightweight flywheel, which increased its power output to 702 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. The CTR2 Sport's kevlar doors and frunk hood were upgraded to carbon fiber, offsetting any weight gained from the car's wider wheels and fenders.

The CTR2 Sport was built to comply with FIA safety regulations and was technically legal to drive to the track, race, and drive home again. Despite being a road car at heart, the CTR2 Sport was also a fantastic racer. Its fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and special six-speed manual transmission with ultra-short gearing combined to make it a freakishly fast machine, as demonstrated by its performance at the 1997 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

At the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, two CTR2 Sports were entered by club racers David and Steve Beddor, who drove the cars to and from the course, which was still fully dirt back then. Despite driving road cars, Steve Beddor qualified first overall, according to Top Gear, and placed second in the race, with his brother finishing fourth behind him. Steve continued to race his CTR2 Sport at events across America and has recorded a podium finish in 76 percent of the races he has entered in this car.

Today, one of the rare CTR2 Sports is up for auction. Originally exported to Germany, it was fitted with an exhaust silencer that reduced its power to a mere 591 horsepower. Under its current owner, it underwent a full engine rebuild, including the installation of a water injection system, and a suspension overhaul, preparing it for the next stage of its life with a new owner. The auction ends on Thursday, and the new owner will soon take possession of this legendary car.
