The A.Rodda marks the first bottle reviewed from the December 17 Club Booze Hunter case and the first of our Beechworth Chardonnay double. Whilst being named ‘Young Gun of Wine’ in 2015, Adrian has been making wine since 1998. Much of this time was spent at Oakridge in the Yarra Valley, a winery with a large part to play in the evolution of Australian Chardonnay during that time.
In 2010 Adrian moved to Beechworth after securing a lease on Smith’s Vineyard. The vineyard itself was first established in 1978 at an elevation of 550m. Whilst not as known as regions such as the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley, Beechworth is home to iconic producers such as Giaconda, Castagna and Sorrenberg.
On the nose the wine has serious depth. There’s bountiful grapefruit and yellow peach fruit with plenty of cashew and almond meal tied in. In the mouth, the wine is both full yet light. There’s some beautiful texture supporting all the elements that are evident on the nose.
I give this wine a ‘baked white fish with seasoned crumbs out of 5’
