Three tree species dominate the sub-alpine forests of the Uinta Mountain high-country along the Mirror Lake Highway. Lodgepole Pine, Engelmann's Spruce and sub-alpine fir grow in clumps between the rocky outcrops and plethora of lakes the dot the high elevation landscape. Telling these species apart takes a little knowledge and a close look, as they share many similar characteristics. By looking at the conifer's needles, bark, and cones you'll be able to pick out the different types and have a little better understanding of the forest. The lodgepole pine and Engelmann's spruce have both been decimated by the bark beetles. So you'll notice that as many as half the trees are dead.
