Hundreds of Berkeley's international students showed up at Memorial Stadium Saturday for a training camp especially designed for them: "American Football 101." The one-hour Student Orientation event, hosted by the Berkeley International Office and Cal Athletics, offered the students instruction and practice in football drills led by Golden Bear players. The one-hour training is intended as a fun way to familiarize students with a sport that most of them have had little or no exposure to, growing up in foreign countries. Saturday's practice drills included punting, passing, receiving, blocking, sprinting, goal-kicking, and a lot of positive reinforcement from the player "coaches."
One student was overheard asking, "Why are these balls shaped this way? It does not make any sense to me."
Australian student, Herin Vais said, "[The] guys that have been taking us through the drills have been really good... they clearly know what they're doing. It's been a really great day."
The international students were also treated to pizza, a Cal T-shirt and a ticket to the football season home opening game against Grambling State University this Saturday.
