Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has been elected for another four years after being returned to power in a landslide win for the labor party at Saturday's state election.
A huge 52 seats were picked up by the incumbent Labor government, the Liberals holding just two seats, leaving questions about who will be the next opposition leader.
The Labor party’s COVID response, tough stance on the hard border and the premier’s popularity were enough to sway many voters away from the Liberals.
Labor’s win saw Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup’s time as the state’s Liberal leader come to an end in an election deemed unwinnable for the party.
He described the landslide victory for Labor as a “very difficult loss” for the Liberals and announced his intention to step down from politics.
Outgoing Liberal MP Peter Katsambanis said the election loss must be a “wakeup call for the party”.
“We can’t just dismiss this as pandemic politics just like we dismissed 2017 as an aberration because we were in government for a long time," he said.
WA Nationals Leader Mia Davies, a frontrunner for Opposition Leader, said she was willing to step up and take the position of opposition leader.
