Hey friends, jambo! Welcome back to another video. Welcome if this is your first time here. Today I’ll be sharing with you guys some natural hair rules I no longer follow after 4 years of my natural hair care journey.
The first one for me is only focusing on shampooing the scalp on wash day and not my hair strands. If you watch my older wash day videos, I am very guilty of doing this. I learned the hard way that I need to clean my hair strands just as well as I clean my scalp. I noticed that whenever I failed to clean my hair strands properly, my hair would stay dry even after applying a leave in conditioner or a moisturizing cream. I quickly realized that it was because of the buildup on my hair strands that was preventing my hair from taking in moisture. I think that the idea of not shampooing the hair strands may work for people who barely use any products on their hair on a regular basis.
The second one is exclusively finger detangling. I have been a huge crusader for finger detangling on my channel and I think it has helped me tremendously with length retention. The thing that I’ve noticed about finger detangling from personal experience is that the longer my hair has gotten the more time I have had to spend on finger detangling and sometimes it gets a bit frustrating. To some extent I feel like finger detangling is presented as something simple that doesn’t take too much time but from my experience it’s not. Maybe I have been doing it wrong but finger detangling is not walk in the park. Nowadays I incorporate combs especially while deep conditioning and applying my leave in conditioner on wash day. I usually then abstain from using combs until my next wash day.
The third one is deep conditioning overnight. I didn’t do this often but I did it a few times. Apparently there’s such a thing as over moisturizing one’s hair. Too much moisture can damage the hair and i think the proper term for this is hygral fatigue. Hygral fatigue can be caused by practices such as leaving conditioner on the hair for too long and sleeping with wet hair. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced hygral fatigue but once I learned that this was a problem, I stopped the overnight deep conditioning. Also, leaving conditioners on hair for too long may affect the scalp and cause issues in that area as well. Nowadays, I deep condition for about an hour or two and rinse off the deep conditioner. I like to start my wash day in the morning to give myself enough time to get it all done in one day.
The fourth one goes hand in hand with the third one. I stopped spraying water on my hair before bed time. I think a lot of us have heard of the analogy that hair is like a plant and it needs to be watered. As much as there’s a lot of truth in that analogy, I’ve realized that I don’t need to spray water on my hair every day or several times a day in order for it to grow. I will admit that at some point, I was overdoing the spraying by doing it several times a day. I have found that spraying a leave in conditioner twice a week which is roughly every 3 to 4days works best for me.
The fifth one is using a lot of different products on my hair at any given time. Whether it’s during wash day, styling or just moisturizing. I only use 4 products on my natural hair care routine and my hair has been doing well. A shampoo, deep conditioner, leave in conditioner or moisturizing cream and grease are the 4 main products that I have been using. I also prefer simple hair styles like twists or braids with my own hair which eradicates the need for styling products like moose in my natural hair routine. If you’re interested in knowing the specific products that I use on my hair, I’ll link the video in the description box.
Are there any natural hair practices or products that you eventually stopped in your natural hair routine? Feel free to share them in the comments section.
