What would happen if the Moon suddenly started orbiting closer, like...MUCH closer?
Hint: it's a really bad time for everyone involved.
There is an invisible sphere around Earth(and other massive objects) where a Moon which falls too close will become spaghettified, known as the Roche limit. The gravity on one side of the Moon becomes so much stronger than the gravity felt on the other side that it shreds the entire object like spaghetti. Something similar is how Saturn's ring system was formed, but with a much larger Moon than our own. The Roche limit is why ring systems are common in the Universe because they are a byproduct of how gravity works and will always form when conditions are right.
From Wikipedia:
"In celestial mechanics, the Roche limit, also called Roche radius, is the distance from a celestial body within which a second celestial body, held together only by its own force of gravity, will disintegrate because the first body's tidal forces exceed the second body's self-gravitation. Inside the Roche limit, orbiting material disperses and forms rings, whereas outside the limit, material tends to coalesce. The Roche radius depends on the radius of the second body and on the ratio of the bodies' densities.
The term is named after Édouard Roche the French astronomer who first calculated this theoretical limit in 1848."
