Around 120 CE, Rome’s elite Ninth Legion (Legio IX Hispana)—once famed for its bravery in Britain—vanished from the historical record. Last mentioned stationed at Eboracum (modern-day York), the legion may have marched north to confront rebellious tribes in Caledonia (Scotland)—and was never heard from again.
No official account details their fate. Some believe the entire legion was annihilated in battle by fierce northern tribes. Others argue it was later reassigned elsewhere and quietly disbanded. Despite extensive archaeological and historical searches, their disappearance remains one of Rome’s great military mysteries.
