Celeste - Strange - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting performers that are shaping the future of music.

Maybe we should thank the church. Celeste's unique voice was nurtured by daily participation in services with her mom while living in the UK’s Brighton as a child. And unique it certainly is, with a fiery temperament that can either soothe or incite. Some writers suggest a blend of Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday in Celeste’s vocal approach, and they’re not far off base; as the 24-year-old Brit fits her phrases into one of her smokey songs, a certain kind of classicism is being brought into the present tense. The skills she uses to achieve this feat were nurtured along the way. There’s the influential spirit of those hymns she loved, and for awhile she enjoyed a performing arts school scholarship to bolster her talent. And paying attention to life opened her eyes even more. When Brighton became a bit claustrophobic, she was off to London to have her gifts further celebrated. A string of songs trickled out, an artistic approach was refined, and and audience began to grow. From “Chocolate” to “Father’s Son” to “Strange” an enticing confidence continues to blossom in her music. When you watch her take over our studio for the latter song and “Lately,” you’ll get a feel for the way she effortlessly unites both charm and power.
