ANOTHER SIDE of BUCHAREST | Little Paris of the East & Romanian Athenaeum

Описание: Touring another side of Bucharest Romania in search of some hidden gems away from the tourist trail. I found Little Paris of the East, Bucharest’s oldest park Cișmigiu & the grandiose Romanian Athenaeum.

After a full day exploring the main sights yesterday it was time to get off the beaten track and find some more unusual places to visit. My day started in an area often referred to as the Little Paris of the East owing to the neighbourhood’s parisian influenced architecture and design. After just a few minutes it was easy to see how it got its name!

After learning about the mixture of modern and communist buildings in the old town we stopped at an art gallery for ten minutes and were then offered some free samples of cake from a local bakery. We wandered around a marketplace selling street food , antiques and clothing that I’ll probably never be able to find again and then walked to the park.

Cișmigiu Park is Bucharest’s oldest park and the largest in the central area. It dates back to 1847 when it was opened up in Wallachia and has been here ever since. Inside are beautiful flowers and gardens as well as a lake and wildlife enclosures.

Next up on my tour of Bucharest is the elegant Romanian Athenaeum - a 19th century circular domed concert hall - a spectacular place both inside and out. I took a self guided tour which gave me access to the many classical reception and conference rooms as well as the grand and colourful auditorium where I found a massive 75 metre fresco illustrating thousands of years of Romanian history.

My day ended by watching an impressive light and water show at the Parcul Unirii Fountains (piata unirii fantani). The atmosphere was buzzing and the show easily kept my attention for the duration. Great to see an alternative side of bucharest!
