My childhood was pretty tumultuous, but I was able to spend a lot of time with him. To me he was a calm and steady presence, a loving and stoic man who took his word and his way of moving through the world very seriously. He was active in a local Freemason lodge and always pushed me to pay attention to what I was doing, to be present, and to think about how my choices echoed out beyond the moment. I did not really understand those lessons then, but as I got older I started hearing his voice again in different moments of my life, and this song feels like it carries that same weight.

For me this track speaks to the idea that what we do in the dark is eventually brought into the light, and that we should not work against each other if we can help it. It is about giving more than you take and living in a way that respects the fact that we are even here at all.
