In the heart of Twic County, Warrap State, South Sudan, tragedy struck a small community on a journey that was meant to secure life, not take it. Two young boys, barely old enough to understand the world around them, have lost everything—their mother, their home, and the security of family.

Their mother, along with six other women, had set out from Malaul Aleu to Akoc Payam, searching the forest for fruits to feed their children. For them, it was a simple act of survival—an act that countless mothers undertake daily. But this ordinary journey turned into a nightmare when they encountered what locals describe as a “human lion,” a horrific predator that claimed their lives.

Eyewitness accounts tell a harrowing story.
The boys’ grandmother, herself trembling with grief, recounted the tragedy. “I heard screams in the forest and ran as fast as I could,” she said. “By the time we reached the place, my daughter was gone… eaten before our eyes. Six other mothers were gone too.” Her voice faltered, but her message was clear: the children are now without parents, left to navigate a world that has shown them unimaginable cruelty.

Other villagers confirm the harrowing conditions along the route. Thousands have been displaced, forced away from their homes by conflict and insecurity. In these desperate circumstances, countless mothers have risked their lives to gather food, only to meet deadly dangers along the way.

Heart2Help Foundation South Sudan visited the area to speak with eyewitnesses and assess the situation. Today, these two little boys are orphaned, their father having fled for his own safety, abandoning them in the care of their grieving grandmother. Life is precarious, and the need for immediate support is urgent.
