The first thing I remember is the weight of the city giving way behind us.
Stone does not fall quietly. It groans first, like something alive and wounded, then it breaks. When the masonry collapsed into the alley, the concussion pushed dust into my mouth and ears and turned the morning light into a choking gray haze. Berlin was already dying around us, but in that moment it felt like the city was fighting back.
We were inside the government district when the machine gun opened up from the second floor of a shattered administrative building. The burst came low and flat, disciplined, not panicked. My point man, Corporal Naomi Whitaker, was halfway across the narrow street when it hit. She didn’t scream. She dropped hard, rifle skidding across broken cobblestone, helmet bouncing once before settling near the curb.
She was alive. I could tell from the way her fingers twitched.
But alive and exposed are two different things.
In a street that tight, with brick walls rising on both sides and windows staring down like empty eyes, “stunned” might as well mean “next.”
