In late September, 60 million metric tons of water and mud poured through Guangfu Township in eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County. With over 5,000 hectares of farmland, the township is the historic cultivation area for countless families. Farmers work to produce grain critical to Taiwan’s food supply while also preserving rare crops now grown only in Guangfu. The flood, however, has left all of that in question as thick, trash-filled layers of mud continue to smother much of the land. In this episode of Zoom In Zoom Out, we talk to those farmers fighting to preserve agricultural heritage and save their families’ ancestral farmland.
