Admission
Admission means to confess or to acknowledge something to be true.
In the legal context, an "admission" is a statement made by a party to a legal case that is against their own interest and can be used as evidence against them in court. It is a formal acknowledgement of certain facts that weakens their legal position and can be crucial in proving a case. Admissions can be made in various forms, such as in documents, during testimony, or even through conduct. All confessions are admissions, but not all admissions are confessions.
For example, if in a car accident case, a driver says to the other driver, "It was my fault, I ran the red light," this statement could be considered an admission and used as evidence against them to prove negligence in a subsequent lawsuit. In a criminal case, if the accused person admits that he was present at the scene of the crime, it may be used as circumstantial evidence. A confession on the other hand would be where the accused person is admitting that he committed the criminal act.
