During the Civil War, certain Union generals used creativity to turn war into a fight for freedom.
General Benjamin F. Butler declared that people escaping slavery who reached Union lines were “contraband of war,” meaning they could not be sent back — protecting thousands and allowing them to join the Union cause.
General John C. Frémont, known as “The Pathfinder,” became one of the first to order freedom for enslaved people in rebel lands, showing that conscience and command could work together. And General Gordon Granger carried hope to Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865 — the day now celebrated as Juneteenth.
Together, these leaders proved that laws and bravery could open the door to freedom for all.
