A leader puts their people first. When the team feels valued, they will value the customer and the organization.

We say the job of the leader is to take care of their people. We don't specifically say, take care of the customers or take care of the products or the procedures or anything else.

Customers are not number one. Your people are number one. Here's why.

When you take care of your people, your people will take care of these things, the customer, the product, and the procedures.

This came to light when I was at a quick service restaurant. I was in back for the morning briefing, the team was together and they had a bad day. The day before, someone had screwed up on the deep fryer. So the team leader was sort of haranguing the team:

“Now, make sure” and

“blah, blah, blah.”

“Now go out there and sell some fries!”

If you're not treated with empathy, then how are you going to treat the customer with empathy. We have to treat our people with empathy if we expect them to treat the customers empathy. So our job as leaders is to take care of the team and the team takes care of the customers.
