Our last hike of the season is the Abbott Ridge Trail at Glacier National Park in British Columbia, Canada. Well worth the 1,140 m elevation over 13 km distance (out and back), it’s a beautiful, varied and well-kept trail that rewards you with breathtaking views, exceeding even our highest expectations.
The trail starts at the Illecillewaet campground, going steeply in the trees for about 2.2 km up to Marion Lake. At the fork we took the “short but steep” path up to the meadows where the views opened up to the surrounding mountains. As we did this hike in late September, the meadows were even more stunning with the bright autumnal colours all around.
From the meadows the trail became rockier and we continued to climb until we reached the ridge, where we finally got the panoramic alpine views: mountains, snow fields and glaciers at every angle. But don’t be fooled by the “end of trail” sign - the ridge extends for another kilometre!
We took a long lunch break at the end of the ridge before starting to make our way down… until we found out that there was more to go. 😱 Stay tuned for the sequel of this video, where we explore the path from Abbott Ridge up to peak of Mount Abbott.
Special thanks to @Kenton & Tricia (link below) for sharing their footage. It was truly a memorable hike and we’re happy to have shared it with such great company.
