This old Maltese had passed black vaginal discharge for the past few days. She has a very painful swollen abdomen indicated a womb filled with pus.
Diagnosis is pyometra. The rectal temperature is very low at around 35 deg. This dog is septicaemic and anemic. The owner was advised on an IV drip with antibiotics and spay the next day after the dog is stabilised. Chances of survival are below 50%. The owner decided to bring the dog home with medication. Spaying the female dog when she is young will have prevented this situation..
