THE MILL KING
Kvarnkungen is Scandinavia's largest stump mill or also called a post mill, which is the most common type of windmill on Öland. Here the whole mill house is turned on the "stump" to get straight towards the wind. Most stump mills were smaller than the Mill King and belonged to an individual farm. They could stand in a long line in good wind conditions. The mill king is a customs mill, which means that the farmers could come and grind their grain for a fee, a duty, usually in kind. In his own mill, the farmer ground oats and barley for animal feed. In Kvarnkungen he ground wheat and rye into flour. In the meantime, he was able to take the ferry over to Kalmar and carry out errands there. On the way home he picked up the ground flour. In good winds, the Mill King could grind 400 kg of flour and pit per hour.
The mill king was built in Kalmar in 1749. It was moved to Björnhovda in the 1880s. The mill has two pairs of stones that you can grind with at the same time, one pair for wheat and rye with a sieve for bread, the other pair for oats and barley for animal feed. The first miller was Per Persson from Skåne. He and his servant lived in a room in the cold and draughty mill. When Per got married and had children, a cottage was built next to the mill.
THE QUEEN
The queen is a so-called Dutch mill. Until the middle of the 19th century, in principle all windmills on Öland had been of the stump mill type. At this time, they faced competition from the larger and more efficient Dutch mills. It is believed to have originally been developed in Holland during the 1570s. The construction of the Dutch mill differs from the stump mill in that this is only the top part, the hood, which is rotatable.
The Queen was originally built in Kalmar at Postmästarlyckan by Sandås. Per Persson, from Skåne who was also the first miller to run Kvarnkungen, moved the Queen across Kalmarsund in the 1880s to the place it stands today. The queen was a customs mill, which means that the farmers could come and grind their grain for a fee, a duty, usually in kind.
In 1923, the Queen was taken over by Ernst Carlsson, who came from Skärlöv on Öland. When Ernst was in America, the Queen was leased by John Wahlström, who also owned the Mill King. In the Queen, wheat was then ground into flour. The operation lasted until 1947.
