Origins of the War
The Uganda-Tanzania War, which led to the fall of Kampala, began in October 1978 when Amin made the ill-fated decision to invade the Kagera Salient, a strip of land in northern Tanzania. This invasion was both irrational and provocative, given Uganda’s weakening military position and economic deterioration at the time. Amin justified his invasion by falsely claiming that Tanzanian forces had crossed into Ugandan territory, which was not the case.
