Title: Cross-domain Metadata Schemas: what do YOU call a sample and how do YOU describe it?
Presenter: Physical Samples and Collections in the Research Data Ecosystem IG (Kerstin Lehnert, Jens Klump , Esther Plomp, Lesley Wyborn, Kirsten Elger, Ely Wallis, Rolf Krahl)
DESCRIPTION
Rich metadata is essential for discovering, describing, accessing, and reusing physical samples. Within domains there is increasing agreement on what are the mandatory and desirable attributes, but how do these relate to other domains. Does each domain define a sample the same way? Can we identify core metadata elements that are common to samples say from Geoscience, Anthropology, Biodiversity, Materials science? Are there vocabularies that we can share?
The Objectives of this session is to compare and contrast the way different domains define exactly what a sample is and what are the core metadata elements and vocabularies they used to describe them.
Meeting agenda
0-5 Minutes (5 minutes): Welcome and Introduction (Kerstin Lehnert)
5-15 Minutes (10 minutes): Review of the IG’s Catalogue of Groups/Projects Working on Physical samples and their Identifiers and invite new additions from the audience (Jens Klump)
15-35 Minutes (20 minutes): Lightning talks (5 minutes each) from different domains/groups on 1) what do they define as a sample and 2) what are the key metadata schemas and vocabularies they use to describe samples.
IGSN e.V. Metadata Working Group (Kirsten Elger, GFZ, Potsdam)
Archaeology (Jens Klump, CSIRO)
GBIF (Ely Wallis, Atlas of Living Australia, Australia)
RDA Sample Type Classification Working Group (Rolf Krahl, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Germany)
35-80 Minutes (45 Minutes) Community Forum on comparing and contrasting what is a sample and seeing if ‘universal’ metadata elements can be defined that are used across multiple domains and groups.
85-90 Minutes (10 Minutes) Closure and Next steps (Jens Klump)
