China's construction of the Shanghai Yangshan Port, the world's largest deep-water port, has made a significant impact on global maritime trade. With an investment of 70 billion yuan, it has surpassed the United States in terms of throughput and has become the leading port globally.
Located in the archipelago outside Hangzhou Bay, Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port consists of Xiaoyangshan Island, Donghai Bridge, and Yangshan Bonded Port Area. The natural conditions of this area, including its deep waters, absence of sedimentation, and favorable ocean currents, make it an ideal location for a deep-water port.
The construction of Yangshan Port involved extensive research and design, with over 4,000 scientists and researchers contributing to the project. The construction was divided into four phases, and it took six years of preparation before the final plan was implemented.
As the primary component of the larger Shanghai Port, Yangshan Deepwater Port handles over 50% of its container throughput. Since its inception in the 1990s, the port has continually expanded its capacity, boasting more than 30 berths with depths of up to 15 meters by 2012. In 2020, Yangshan Port handled a staggering 43.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers, surpassing the total cargo throughput of all US ports that year.
This remarkable achievement has solidified Yangshan Port's position as the world's top port for 12 consecutive years and has raised concerns in the United States due to its potential to challenge their dominance in maritime transportation.
The construction of Shanghai Yangshan Port showcases China's unparalleled infrastructure development capabilities and signifies its growing influence in global trade.
