This Was So Much More Dangerous Than We Expected (Semuc Champey)

Описание: Semuc Champey is a beautiful part of Guatemala that many tourists miss because it's a bit out of the way. It's known for being a beautiful spot with tiered turquoise pools that visitors can swim in, but what we did NOT expect was the intense caving that is commonly as part of every tour of Semuc Champey. It was INTENSE.

After leaving Lake Atitlan and visiting Chichicastenango Market, we spent a couple of days in the town of Coban before arriving to Lanquin; the town nearest Semuc Champey. From here, we hired a private guide to take us to the beautiful Semuc Champey pools. It's a bit of a hike to get to a beautiful lookout of Semuc Champey, but it was totally worth it and we got to see the iconic shot of this natural wonder in Guatemala.

After taking in the arial views of Semuc Champey, we headed down to swim in the natural pools. It was more like a playground than we expected, with slides, jumps, and mini waterfalls everywhere. There were hardly any other tourists around as we chose to visit during the week, and it was well worth it!

After a quick lunch stop, our guide brought us to the caves at Semuc Champey. We knew this was part of the tour, but had heard so little about it that we thought it was going to be a bit gimicky. Like one of those add-ons they put on a tour just to make you feel like you've had a full experience, but is actually kind of missable. Boy were we wrong. The caving experience was an absolutely highlight of our time in Guatemala so far, but it was truly terrifying. There was no one in the cave but us and our guide, and although our guide was confident and experienced, our route through the cave felt so dangerous. We were climbing rusty ladders while being pummelled by waterfall water, holding onto ropes with candles in our mouths to see, and blindly jumping into pitch black holes and praying there was deep water below us. We had an absolute blast, but would only recommend this for a certain kind of traveler (i.e. the kind who can put blind faith in a guide and love an adrenaline rush). There is no way this caving adventure would be allowed in our home country of Canada, and that made it all the more thrilling!

After our intense experience at Semuc Champey, we packed up out bags and left Lanquin to make our way to an airbnb near Tikal, in northern Guatemala. We'll share our next adventure at Tikal next week!
