Since the dawn of time, in people’s minds, religious leaders and health workers were almost the same. It is only a few hundred years ago - in the Western world - that medicine took on a scientific approach, leaving religion behind. In the 1980s and 1990s, with the growing burden of HIV/AIDS, belief in witchcraft and spiritualism was at an all-time high, especially in the rural areas of Uganda. In 1989, Yo-wa-ni-na Nanyonga, a very religious Catholic distributed ordinary soil, which she claimed could cure any disease, including AIDS.
